When evening had come, he was there alone. It was dark. His disciple’s boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, and he was alone on the land. The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing, and Jesus had not come to them… and they were afraid.
In the fourth watch of the night, they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia. Seeing them distressed in rowing (for the wind was contrary to them), Jesus came to them… walking on the sea. Drawing near to the boat, he would have passed by them – when the disciples saw him walking on the sea. They were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.” Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.” He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the water to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid… and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got up into the boat with them, the wind ceased. They were very amazed among themselves, and marveled… for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!” Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going (to the land of Gennesaret) and moored to the shore.
When they had come out of the boat, immediately the people of that place recognized him. They sent into that whole surrounding region and brought to where they heard he was all who were sick (on their mats). They begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
